Greener Grass

Today I mowed the lawn in ballet flats. It's all I had! It was wonderful. I never get to mow in NYC. I love South Dakota. (Did I just say that?)

September, Part I

Where do I even begin?? September came and went, and so much happened, but I have no blog posts to show for it!! Let's re-cap... September, Part I I went on a first date on the 10 year anniversary of September 11th. I cried all morning watching coverage of the memorial on TV and then pulled myself together to meet a stranger I met on the train at a museum in the Upper East Side. I had some mixed emotions, but JD sent me a text saying that I had to do it for Emericuh and that I couldn't let the terrorists win. So I met 9/11 guy outside Frick where we pretended to know a lot about art and then gave up and made fun of portraits together. Then a walk across central park and brunch. It was very New York. Then I went home, watched more 9/11 stuff on TV and cried some more. It was a weird day. The next week was my last week at Zoni Language Center, and it was a lot more emotional than I had anticipated. Suddenly things that I had hated about work were things that I was becoming

FNO

There are times when I wait for a train for 20 minutes and then step in a puddle of human urine on my way home and I really question why the H I moved here. And then there are nights that remind me why. Last night was one of those nights. Fashion Night Out is the kick off for Fashion Week in the city, and every store on 5th Ave, in Midtown, Soho, and Meatpacking pulls out all the stops. Stores from Bloomingdales to Macy's to independent designer-owned shops turn on the party. Models in 5 inch heels carry around trays of free drinks. DJ's spin records so music spills out onto the streets. Retail crazies dance shamelessly in store windows. There is body painting. There is free swank. It is freaking awesome. The only less-than stellar part of FNO was my unpreparedness. I wore a three year old gray dress from target and leggings with a hole in the knee. My make-up from 6:30AM had worn off, and I had a headache. I was anything BUT fashionable. But I drank the free drinks and b

Uptown Girls

Today a 7 month and 5 day chapter of my life ended, a chapter I like to call "That Time EH and I Lived Together in Harlem." It was a great chapter, a little too short if you ask me (but all the good ones are). In between the pages of the three seasons we spent together there was adventure, crime, drama, and comedy. There were ups and there were downs. And today two uptown girls who spent their first night together in NYC eating Chinese take-out out of styrofoam containers, drinking champagne out of the bottle, and sleeping on towels on the hardwood floor said goodbye to one another as they prepared for their next big move. EH is heading West to Chicago where she will get to live with someone who appreciates house music and whose hair won't clog the drain. Some could call it a roommate upgrade, but I have a sneaking suspicion that she'll also miss certain qualities of her fellow Harlemite who also shamelessly loves Glee and making 'to do' lists.
